How do I identify a secretaire drawer?

Look for a middle drawer front that pulls forward and hinges down horizontally. This reveals a fitted interior of pigeonholes and small writing compartments. Beneath this drop-front lies the main working surface, distinguishing the piece from standard chests of drawers.

Where should I place a secretaire bookcase?

Position these tall cabinets against sturdy walls in studies, living rooms, or libraries with stable ambient temperatures. Keep them away from direct sunlight to protect mahogany and walnut veneers. Ensure adequate floor clearance in front of the piece for the drop-front writing flap to open fully.

How do I care for the leather writing surface?

Dust the leather regularly with a dry cloth and avoid using harsh chemical cleaning products. Apply a specialised leather balsam periodically to maintain suppleness and prevent cracking. Keep inkwells and liquids away from the writing surface to avoid permanent staining on antique hides.
