A purdonium is a dedicated coal or log cabinet designed to keep fuel tidy beside the hearth. They often include a hinged or sloping door and a removable metal liner. These domestic pieces allowed households to store coal discreetly in the main living rooms of Victorian and Edwardian homes.

How do I date a log box?

Dating relies on identifying the prevailing styles, timber choices, and construction methods recorded in the period evidence. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature specific hardware and decorative motifs. Earlier Georgian pieces show simpler lines and heavier timber framing compared to later metal-plated or inlaid variants.

Were these boxes only for logs?

Many of these containers served primarily for coal, kindling, or peat before modern central heating became common. Their robust metal linings were built to contain soot and small fuel debris. Today, buyers repurpose these historical bins and scuttles to hold firewood, magazines, or house plants.

What materials were used?

Common materials include domestic and imported hardwoods like oak, mahogany, and walnut, alongside softwood pine. Metal elements in brass and copper provided structural reinforcement and decorative shine. Craftsmen combined these elements using hand-forged ironwork, embossed sheet metal, and wood inlay.
