How do I identify Satsuma ware?

Satsuma ware is recognised by its distinctive ivory-coloured, finely crackled glaze that provides a warm ground for intricate enamel and gilt painting. Most pieces date from the Meiji period onwards and frequently display Japanese court figures, immortals, or dense floral compositions.

What is the difference between Kutani and Satsuma?

Kutani ceramics typically utilise bolder palettes dominated by iron reds, greens, and golds upon either porcelain or earthenware bodies. Satsuma relies primarily on a soft, crackled earthenware base with detailed polychrome figures and heavier gilding.

How were these vases used originally?

These vessels served primarily as decorative display items within parlours, drawing rooms, and studies during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Many larger examples were later converted into table lamps with electrical wiring, while others remained purely ornamental centrepieces.

What period do most of these pieces belong to?

The majority of these figural painted vases date from the nineteenth century, particularly the late Victorian and Meiji periods. A smaller number extend into the early twentieth century, including Chinese Republican period pieces.
