What is a smokers bow chair?

A smokers bow is a sturdy low-backed wooden armchair with steam-bent arms, historically used in offices, smoking rooms, and country houses. They offer robust support and low profiles suited for sitting at desks or tables.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian chairs?

Victorian chairs tend to feature darker walnut or heavy elm timbers with denser turnings, while Edwardian versions often employ lighter oak. Construction details and finish oxidation help distinguish the earlier nineteenth-century workshop methods from twentieth-century production.

Were these chairs used at desks?

Many examples were built specifically for office and library use, serving as heavy-duty seating for writing desks. Their sturdy armrests and compact frames made them practical for daily administrative work.

What woods were used?

Makers relied on durable British hardwoods, pairing steam-bent ash or beech bows with carved elm seats. Oak and mahogany also appear frequently, particularly on office and library variants.
