What were edwardian silver servers used for?

These utensils were created to serve specific food items during formal Edwardian meals, such as asparagus, fish, salad, and sardines. Each implement was shaped to handle a particular dish cleanly and efficiently. Hosts relied on these specialised items to maintain etiquette across multi-course dining occasions, presenting provisions from central serving dishes onto individual plates.

How do I distinguish sterling silver from silver plate?

Sterling silver items typically bear official assay office hallmarks indicating the purity standard, city of testing, and date letter. These marks are stamped directly into the metal. Silver-plated pieces usually display maker abbreviations or alternative stamps denoting electroplated nickel silver or standard plate, lacking the definitive lion passant symbol.

How should I care for silver servers at home?

Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional gentle cleaning with a specialised silver polish preserves the finish. Avoid harsh abrasive materials that can wear away thin plating. Storing items in dry environments, particularly anti-tarnish lined boxes or rolls, helps prevent oxidation when the pieces are not in active use on the table.

Did Edwardian servers come in fitted boxes?

Many fine serving sets, including fish servers, butter knives, and sardine forks, were retailed in satin and velvet-lined presentation cases. These boxes protected the items between uses. Original fitted cases bearing retailer stamps add context to a set, showing how the utensils were originally marketed and preserved by the first owners.
