What is an edwardian floor standing lamp?

An edwardian floor standing lamp is a tall lighting standard produced around the early twentieth century. These pieces were designed to illuminate sitting rooms and parlours. They appear in materials ranging from polished brass to carved mahogany and decorated lacquer. Many incorporate adjustable stems to alter the height of the light source.

How were these lamps used?

These tall standards provided ambient room lighting or focused illumination for reading near chairs and sofas. Adjustable arms and swivel mechanisms allowed users to direct the light downward. Some early examples functioned as oil lamps before undergoing conversion to electricity. Others featured specialised reading attachments or twin candle fittings.

How do I date an antique floor lamp?

Dating relies upon stylistic markers, material choices, and construction methods recorded in the piece. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature heavy brass casting, Corinthian capitals, or distinct Art Nouveau plant motifs. Later pieces from the nineteen-twenties introduce walnut tripods and Chinoiserie lacquer finishes. Patents or registration marks on metal components also help establish an era.
