How do I care for walnut veneer?

Keep walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts to prevent the underlying veneer from lifting or drying out. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax sparingly to nourish the timber. Avoid using modern liquid polishes or silicone-based sprays, as these build up and dull the natural lustre of the grain over time.

Are these cupboards suitable for modern clothing?

Many period pieces offer deep internal cavities and adjustable shelving that accommodate modern folded garments and general storage with ease. Wardrobe and armoire variants often feature hanging rails or space that can be adapted for contemporary apparel. Buyers should check internal depth dimensions carefully, as older cabinets were built for narrower hangers than those commonly used today.

How do I distinguish 18th century pieces from revival styles?

Eighteenth century examples typically show hand-cut joinery, pegged framing, and timber patination developed over centuries of use. Revival pieces from the Victorian and Edwardian eras often utilise machine-sawn elements and standardised hardware alongside historical stylistic motifs. Examining the backboards and interior construction usually reveals the manufacturing techniques characteristic of the specific period.
