How do I clean an antique brass mirror frame?

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface particles without disturbing the underlying metal. Avoid harsh commercial brass cleaners that strip away the aged patina accumulated over decades. If the glass requires cleaning, apply glass cleaner directly to a cloth rather than the mirror itself to prevent moisture from seeping behind the plate and damaging the silvering.

What is the difference between Victorian and Edwardian brass mirrors?

Victorian brass mirrors typically favour heavy cast ornamentation, exuberant rococo scrolls, cherubs, and deep mask crests. The metalwork is substantial, reflecting the ornate tastes of the nineteenth century. Edwardian examples often lean towards lighter proportions, cleaner lines, and influences from the Arts and Crafts movement or Dutch styles. Frames from this later period embrace simpler geometric shapes and hammered copper or brass surfaces.

Are original mirror plates common in these pieces?

Many surviving mirrors retain their original glass plates, which often display light foxing, small blemishes, or gentle darkening towards the edges. These age marks serve as indicators of period authenticity rather than defects. When a mirror plate looks unusually pristine in an nineteenth-century frame, it has likely been replaced during its lifetime. Both original and replaced plates function well, though collectors generally prize untouched surfaces.
