What is a dumb waiter?

A dumb waiter is a tiered table with multiple rotating or fixed shelves stacked on a central pillar. They were originally placed beside dining tables to hold dishes and spare glasses during meals.

How many tiers do these tables have?

The pieces listed feature either two or three graduating shelves arranged vertically. The top tier is typically the smallest, with each lower shelf increasing in diameter.

What wood are they made from?

These tables are built from mahogany, a dense and dark hardwood valued for its strength and rich grain. Some examples also incorporate brass in their castors or revolving mechanisms.

How do I date a tiered table?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber characteristics, and stylistic markers such as George II or Georgian turning. Pieces span from the mid-eighteenth century through to the early twentieth century.
