What is a partners desk?

A partners desk provides workspace on both sides, featuring matching sets of drawers or cabinets facing outward. This configuration allowed two individuals to sit opposite one another in a shared office. Such desks often stand freely in the middle of a room rather than against a wall. They represent some of the largest and most commanding forms available.

How do I care for the leather top?

Leather writing inserts require gentle cleaning with a damp cloth and occasional treatment with appropriate leather dressings to prevent drying. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip the original gold tooling. Many antique desks retain their original leather, which benefits from minimal interference and careful daily use.

Where should I place a freestanding desk?

Free standing desks are finished on all sides, making them suitable for the centre of a study or office. They require adequate floor space to allow movement around the pedestals and chairs. Positioning them away from direct sunlight protects the dark wood polish and the leather writing surface from fading.

How do I distinguish a Victorian desk from an Edwardian one?

Victorian desks generally feature heavier proportions, denser timbers like Cuban mahogany, and deeper hand-carved details. Their aesthetic leans towards formal weight and rich, dark patination. Edwardian pieces often display slightly lighter construction, sometimes influenced by earlier Georgian revivals, with simpler lines and brighter mahogany finishes.
