How do I identify a Georgian dark mahogany mirror?

Georgian examples often feature hand-cut fretwork frames, secondary woods like pine or oak behind the plate, and specific motifs such as the Ho-Ho bird. The timber grain appears dense and dark, reflecting eighteenth-century construction methods. Examination of the backboards and fixings helps confirm the period. Hand-beveled glass or older mercury plates further indicate genuine age.

What is the difference between a cheval mirror and a toilet mirror?

A cheval mirror stands independently on the floor, designed for full-length viewing with pivoting side frames. A toilet mirror is a smaller version built to sit atop a dressing chest or table. Both utilise mahogany framing, but their scale and intended placement in the room differ entirely.

Where should I hang a heavy mahogany wall mirror?

Heavy wall-hung pieces require secure fixing directly into structural wall studs or solid masonry using appropriate weight-rated hardware. The substantial weight of the timber frame and glass demands reliable support. Positioning them above a console table or mantelpiece follows traditional placement patterns seen in period interiors.

Are these mirrors made of solid mahogany?

Most frames combine solid timber mouldings with mahogany veneers applied to stable secondary woods to prevent warping. Cuban mahogany is frequently found on finer Georgian and Regency examples. Construction methods varied by period, with later Victorian and Edwardian pieces sometimes utilising different backing timbers.
