What is a mantle lustre?

A mantle lustre is an ornamental candlestick adorned with hanging glass drops designed to sit upon a fireplace mantelpiece. They serve primarily as decorative objects that catch and refract natural light or candlelight within a room.

How do I style mantle lustres?

Mantle lustres are traditionally displayed as a symmetrical pair at either end of a fireplace mantel shelf. Their reflective crystal drops complement antique mirrors and other glass ornaments when placed near light sources.

Are all lustres made of glass?

While the main body and hanging drops are glass or crystal, many examples incorporate metal components. It is common to find frames and bases fashioned from gilt brass, bronze, or ormolu alongside the glass elements.

How do I identify Victorian lustres?

Victorian examples often feature rich coloured glass such as ruby, cranberry, or flash glass paired with heavy cut crystal. They frequently date from the mid to late nineteenth century and showcase ornate cutting patterns characteristic of the period.
