How do I date an old pine dresser?

Dating relies on construction methods, hardware types, and the character of the timber. Eighteenth-century pieces often display hand-planed surfaces and pegged joinery, whereas Victorian examples feature more standardised machine-cut elements. Paint layers and surface wear also provide clues to age. Original undisturbed paint or early wax patinas help confirm the historical period of manufacture.

Should I choose painted or waxed pine?

Choosing between painted and waxed finishes depends on your interior aesthetic. Painted pieces often retain original historic surfaces that show decades of domestic use and colour evolution. Waxed pine highlights the natural grain and knots of the softwood. Both finishes offer authentic historical character suited to traditional and modern kitchens alike.

Are these dressers supplied in two parts?

Many larger dressers and glazed cabinets are constructed in two separate sections, comprising a heavy base and a removable upper rack. This construction method facilitated transport into domestic kitchens. Smaller dresser bases and specific regional formats are built as single integrated units. Checking the construction details ensures safe delivery and installation in your home.
