What is a cassolette?

A cassolette is a decorative lidded urn designed with a reversible top. One side presents a solid finial for display, while the reverse holds a candle socket. This clever dual function allowed wealthy households to transform decorative mantel pieces into lighting fixtures for evening entertaining.

How do I use them in a room?

Place matched pairs on mantelpieces, sideboards, or console tables to establish formal neoclassical symmetry. They anchor traditional interior schemes effectively when paired with architectural mirrors. Ensure they sit on stable, level surfaces away from heavy foot traffic due to their substantial marble and bronze weight.

How can I tell the period?

Examine the casting quality, the tooling marks on the bronze, and the geological characteristics of the marble bases. Regency and early 19th-century pieces often display sharper hand-chasing than later mass-produced Victorian castings. Stylistic cues like Louis XVI swags or Napoleon III proportions help narrow the manufacturing decade.

What is a Grand Tour piece?

Grand Tour items are 19th-century works purchased by affluent travellers visiting classical sites in Italy and France. They served as sophisticated souvenirs reflecting an educated appreciation of antiquity. These pieces typically replicate famous ancient monuments, urns, and architectural bronzes found in European museums.
