What is a console table used for?

Historically, console tables stood against drawing room walls beneath mirrors or paintings, serving primarily as decorative display surfaces rather than for active daily dining. Their narrow profiles made them ideal for hallways and reception rooms where floor space was restricted.

How do I identify a tilt top table?

Tilt-top tables feature a specialised catch mechanism beneath the circular surface allowing the tabletop to pivot flat against the central pillar when stored. This clever design saved valuable space in period rooms while displaying the polished wood grain.

What is a card table?

Card tables were built specifically for evening entertainment, featuring hinged fold-over tops that doubled the surface area when opened for gaming. Interior compartments frequently provided storage for counters, dice, and playing cards.

How do I care for a rosewood table?

Rosewood tables require stable indoor humidity away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the dense timber and delicate veneers from drying or splitting. Gentle dusting with a dry lint-free cloth preserves the natural polish without the need for heavy waxes.
