How do I care for walnut furniture?

Keep walnut chests away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the timber from drying out or splitting. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply occasional specialist wax to nourish the grain. Avoid using silicone-based polishes or damp cloths, which can damage historical French polish or wax finishes over time. Gentle maintenance preserves the natural lustre of the wood.

What is a Wellington chest?

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow set of drawers distinguished by a locking wooden pilaster down one side. Swinging this side bar outward unlocks the entire stack of drawers. This locking mechanism provided secure storage for papers and personal valuables in 19th-century bedrooms and studies.

How do I distinguish 18th-century pieces?

Eighteenth-century walnut chests typically feature hand-cut dovetails, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, and pegged frame construction. The timber often shows a deeper, softer patina developed through generations of handling. Revival pieces from later periods may mimic earlier styles like Queen Anne or Georgian designs, but interior construction methods and timber finishing reveal their true age.

Where were commodes used?

Commodes served primarily as bedroom storage for clothing, linens, and personal items. Continental examples with marble tops were also placed in reception rooms or hallways. Their decorative serpentine fronts and figured burr walnut veneers allowed them to function as display surfaces as well as practical storage.
