How do I fold these tables?

Most octagonal and occasional tables utilise an ingenious multi-piece wooden hinge system where the frame collapses flat by lifting the top and pivoting the interlocking struts. Take care to support the weight evenly while folding to avoid straining the central pivot joints. Ensure the slots are free from accumulated dust or polish build-up before attempting to fold the base. Forcing a stiff mechanism risks splitting the carved hardwood struts.

Were these made for British homes?

Yes, the vast majority of these items were produced in nineteenth and early twentieth century workshops specifically to satisfy British interior tastes for exotic, highly decorated colonial furnishings. They served as occasional pieces for serving tea or displaying decorative ornaments in drawing rooms. Export production flourished under the British Raj, combining traditional Indian and Burmese motifs with Western furniture proportions. This hybrid design language made them immensely popular in Victorian and Edwardian households.

How do I clean carved teak?

Remove surface dust gently using a soft-bristled artist's brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment to reach deep into the carved recesses. Avoid wet cloths or harsh chemical cleaners that can lift inlaid brass or bone elements. Apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly with a soft cloth to nourish the dry hardwood and maintain a natural sheen. Buff lightly after drying to protect the timber grain without clogging the fine chisel work.

How do I date an Indian table?

Examine the construction methods, fixing nails, and the style of the brass or bone inlay to establish an approximate decade. Pieces from the late Victorian period often display tighter, more complex geometric chip carving compared to later twentieth-century iterations. Original hardware, such as handmade brass hinges or pins on folding bases, offers reliable chronological clues. Regional stylistic traits linked to Bombay or Hoshiarpur also help narrow down the manufacturing window.
