What is the difference between a press and a wardrobe?

A press traditionally incorporates internal sliding trays or shelves specifically intended for storing folded textiles and linens rather than hanging garments. Wardrobes are built primarily with vertical hanging space for coats and dresses. Many antique pieces combine both functions, offering linen trays in an upper section with clothes drawers or hanging space below.

Will these large cupboards fit in modern homes?

Many period pieces were constructed with dismantling in mind, featuring pegged frames or modular sections that allow for easier transport and assembly. Checking the overall height, depth, and door clearance before purchase ensures the piece fits comfortably in the intended room. Ceiling height is often the main constraint with tall Georgian linen presses and late Victorian wardrobes.

How should I care for brown oak furniture?

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes that can cause the oak to split or warp. Regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth preserves the natural finish without building up heavy wax residues. Occasional treatment with a suitable traditional beeswax helps nourish the wood and maintain its warm lustre.
