What tools come in a standard set?

A standard hearth set includes three principal pieces: a shovel for clearing ash, a poker for adjusting fuel, and tongs for gripping logs or coal. These three items constitute the traditional fire iron ensemble found beside period fireplaces.

How do I date a set of fire irons?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as handle turning, metal alloys, and decorative motifs like starbursts or rope twists. Georgian sets tend toward lighter steel work, while Victorian examples often feature heavier brass. Comparing the specific manufacturing techniques and materials helps narrow down the decade of origin.

Were these tools meant for daily use?

Period fire irons were manufactured for active duty in coal and wood-burning hearths. The steel shafts and iron shovel blades were built to withstand regular contact with heat and fuel. Many surviving sets retain the marks of genuine service around the fireplace.

What is the difference between fire irons and a companion set?

Fire irons traditionally rested against the cheeks of the fireplace or hung from a basket grate. Companion sets typically include a dedicated stand or rack designed to hold the tools upright on the hearth floor. Both categories contain the same core implements for tending the fire.

How should I clean brass handles?

Period brass benefits from gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with a non-abrasive metal polish to maintain its lustre. Care must be taken to avoid scrubbing away historical patination on older surfaces. Preserving the natural finish ensures the metal retains its character over time.
