What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a portable piece of furniture constructed in sections with recessed metal fittings, designed to be packed easily for military travel. These chests enabled officers to transport their personal belongings and documents safely across rough terrain and long sea voyages.

Why do these chests divide in two?

Dividing the furniture into separate stacked modules made handling and loading manageable for pack animals and luggage handlers on the move. Each section was fitted with side carrying handles so they could be lifted independently before being secured together for display.

How do I identify teak or camphor wood?

Camphor wood is easily recognised by its distinct aromatic scent when opened and its pale, finely grained appearance. Teak is a heavier, oil-rich tropical timber with a warm brown hue suited to demanding climates. Both woods were chosen for their natural resistance to moisture and pests during overseas deployment.

Where were these pieces used?

These items accompanied military personnel, colonial administrators, and merchants stationed abroad in regions such as India and the Far East. They functioned as practical domestic furniture within temporary quarters and campaign tents. Today, their compact proportions and durable build allow them to serve effectively as bedside tables or living room storage.
