Where should I place a black inlaid sideboard?

These cabinets suit dining rooms, high-ceilinged hallways, or drawing rooms where their dark ebonised surfaces can contrast against lighter walls. Ensure the room has adequate space to accommodate breakfront shapes and opening doors without crowding. Keep them away from direct sunlight to protect tortoiseshell elements and delicate wood veneers from fading or drying out over time.

How do I care for ebonised wood and brass inlay?

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent particulate accumulation in the fine crevices of the inlay. Avoid modern aerosol polishes, which can build up a cloudy residue on the dark ebonised finish. Feed the timber periodically with an appropriate wax recommended for antique furniture, taking care to buff gently around brass and ormolu mounts.

How can I tell a Victorian piece from a later reproduction?

Examine the interior secondary woods, drawer linings, and backboards for hand-cut tool marks and timber shrinkage consistent with nineteenth-century methods. Machine-cut screws or modern plywood indicate a later date of manufacture. Check the quality of the brass inlay and the depth of the ebonising, as period workshops used specific staining and polishing processes that differ from twentieth-century chemical treatments.
