How were console tables used historically?

Console tables served primarily as ornamental furniture placed against drawing room walls, often beneath tall mirrors to reflect light and display decorative objects. Many versions also functioned as multi-use furniture, featuring fold-over tops for card games or tea service when guests arrived.

How do I identify a Georgian console table?

Georgian pieces typically display solid mahogany or satinwood inlay, featuring classical motifs like Neoclassical carving and straight or cabriole legs. They frequently take a demi-lune form designed to fit compact wall spaces in eighteenth-century townhouses.

Where should I place a console table?

A console table fits well in narrow entrance halls, narrow corridors, or behind a sofa in a living room where a deep surface is impractical. Pairing the table with a wall mirror creates a balanced focal point reminiscent of period interior arrangements.

What is the difference between a side table and a console table?

Console tables are historically designed to rely partially on the wall for stability or feature flat backs specifically for wall placement, though many freestanding examples survive. Side tables generally feature four independent legs and stand freely anywhere within a room.
