Treen refers to small, functional wooden objects made by hand before the era of mass manufacturing. These items range from pocket containers to kitchen implements. Collectors prize treen for the tool marks left by makers and the rich patination acquired through centuries of handling.

How did people use snuff boxes?

Snuff users carried small quantities of powdered tobacco in these pocket containers for social consumption. A person would pinch a small amount to inhale or place against the gums. Containers often featured tight-fitting lids or sliding mechanisms to keep the dry powder secure while carried in a waistcoat pocket.

Why are some shaped like shoes?

Shoe and boot shapes served as popular novelty items and symbolic tokens in folk art traditions. Footwear held various cultural meanings related to travel, luck, and betrothal. Carvers utilised the natural contours of a shoe to conceal sliding lids and hinge mechanisms within the heel or sole.

How do I care for wooden boxes?

Wooden containers require stable room temperatures away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber from splitting. Applying occasional wax helps maintain the surface sheen. Avoid using liquid cleaners or soaking the wood, as moisture damages historic finishes and bone inlay.
