A teapoy is a small table or stand specifically designed to hold tea caddies and mixing bowls. They served as social hubs in period drawing rooms where hosts prepared tea for guests. Over time, the form expanded from simple boxes on stands into elaborate occasional tables with fitted compartments and internal work boxes.

How do I identify a Regency tea caddy table?

Regency examples typically feature dark timbers like rosewood, often accented with brass inlay or mounted on central pillar stands with platform bases. Their silhouettes draw heavily on classical architectural motifs. Details such as sarcophagus-shaped boxes and elaborate grain patterns help distinguish pieces from this period against later Victorian iterations.

Were these tables used for anything other than tea?

While originally designed to secure expensive tea leaves away from servants and dampness, many examples were later adapted. Some doubled as work tables for sewing or storage. Interior compartments originally meant for canisters could be removed or reconfigured to hold writing materials, trinkets, or sewing equipment.

How do I care for a rosewood tea table?

Rosewood furniture requires stable indoor humidity levels and protection from direct sunlight to prevent the timber from drying out or fading. Gentle dusting with a dry cloth maintains the finish. Avoid using silicone-based polishes, as they build up over time and dull the natural grain and patina of nineteenth-century wood.
