What is a tambour door?

A tambour door is a flexible panel made of thin wooden slats attached to a fabric canvas backing. It slides horizontally along a grooved track to conceal the interior compartment. This clever mechanism allows access to the cabinet space without needing clearance for swinging hinged doors in a tight bedside area.

How were these commodes used?

These cabinets served primarily beside the bed to house a chamber pot and hold nighttime necessities out of sight. The enclosed cupboard kept odours and clutter contained until morning. They also functioned as general bedside tables for holding candlesticks, pocket watches, and reading materials in Georgian bedchambers.

How do I date a Georgian piece?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, construction methods, and secondary woods used inside the drawers. Georgian pieces typically display hand-cut dovetails and solid mahogany boards rather than modern sheet materials. Design cues like tray tops, serpentine fronts, and specific inlay patterns also help place the piece within the eighteenth or early nineteenth century.

Will a modern bedside fit?

An antique tambour night commode generally has a compact footprint suited to modern bedrooms, though heights can vary. Measuring the available bedside space against the specific dimensions of the cabinet ensures proper clearance. These pieces integrate easily beside standard bed heights, though buyers should check the depth if space between furniture and walls is tight.
