What were antique storage caskets originally used for?

These boxes served secure domestic and travel functions across households. Owners kept tea, letters, sewing equipment, jewellery and playing cards inside them. Many examples included locks and keys because the contents held considerable financial or personal value. Specialised fitted interiors kept delicate items organised and protected during daily use.

How do I care for a wooden antique box?

Keep wooden caskets away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent the timber and veneers from drying out and splitting. Maintain a stable room temperature and relative humidity. Dust the surfaces gently with a soft cloth. Avoid modern silicone polishes, relying instead on traditional microcrystalline wax applied very sparingly if the finish requires nourishment.

How can I tell a Victorian box from a Georgian one?

Georgian boxes often display restrained classical proportions, simple brass stringing, and solid mahogany or walnut construction. Their interiors tend to be straightforward. Victorian boxes frequently embrace more elaborate ornamentation, including extensive mother-of-pearl inlay, papier-mâché, exotic coromandel wood, and complex multi-tiered fitted trays designed for expanding domestic paraphernalia.

Are original keys common with these boxes?

Original working keys remain relatively uncommon because small keys were easily lost over the centuries. Many surviving boxes retain their locks but lack the matching key. Specialist antique locksmiths can sometimes supply replacement keys or fit period-appropriate mechanisms if operating the lock is a priority for the collector.
