Where were sofa tables placed originally?

These tables stood traditionally directly behind the sofa in the centre of a drawing room, providing a surface for candles or writing materials. Their finished backs allowed them to occupy prominent positions where visitors viewed them from all angles.

How do I tell a Regency table from a Victorian one?

Regency tables typically display restrained classical lines, brass stringing, and pillar supports derived from ancient architectural forms. Victorian examples often lean towards heavier proportions, elaborate burr walnut veneers, and darker finishes. Examining the internal drawer construction and secondary timbers provides further confirmation of the manufacturing period.

Can I use a sofa table as a desk?

Many examples function well for writing, particularly those designated in period terms as writing tables or library tables with fitted drawers. Their comfortable working height accommodates modern seating adequately. Care should be taken to protect antique polished surfaces from direct ink or moisture.

What maintenance do these timber surfaces require?

Polished mahogany and rosewood benefit from occasional applications of traditional beeswax to nourish the timber and preserve the lustre. Avoiding direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes prevents the veneer from lifting. Gentle dusting with a soft cloth keeps the grain clear without abrasive build-up.
