What is an antique shirvan carpet?

An antique shirvan carpet is a hand-knotted wool floor covering originating from the Caucasus during the nineteenth or early twentieth century. These pieces feature traditional geometric designs and regional patterns characteristic of Caucasian weaving.

How do I identify a Shirvan rug?

Identification relies on recognising distinct Caucasian geometric motifs, rectilinear borders, and specific regional subtypes such as Bidjov or Baku. The materials typically consist entirely of wool used in both the pile and the foundation.

Where were these carpets made?

These textiles were produced in the Shirvan region of the Caucasus by traditional weavers. The geography heavily influences the specific design vocabulary found in each piece.

How should I live with one?

These wool floor coverings require gentle placement away from heavy moisture and direct sunlight to preserve the natural fibres. Regular careful maintenance ensures the wool pile and geometric structures remain stable over time.
