What is scandinavian country furniture?

Scandinavian country furniture refers to domestic pieces built from regional timbers like pine and elm for everyday use. These items emphasise simple, sturdy construction over elaborate ornamentation. Many examples feature painted surfaces or minimal detailing suited to rural interiors of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

How do I clean painted furniture?

Painted furniture requires gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth to protect the underlying pigment. Avoid modern chemical solvents and harsh abrasive cleaners that strip historic finishes. Mineral paint and older oil-based layers need minimal moisture to maintain their condition over decades of domestic placement.

Where were these pieces made?

These items originate from northern European regions, particularly Sweden, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Local craftsmen built them using accessible regional woods. Regional workshops produced distinct styles ranging from rustic dining tables to refined burr birch centre tables.

How do I identify burr birch?

Burr birch is identified by its turbulent, swirling grain patterns created by tree growth irregularities. It produces highly decorative surfaces when polished or veneered onto furniture. Cabinetmakers utilised this timber on occasional tables and chests of drawers to create rich visual texture.
