How do I clean painted wood carvings?

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to prevent abrasion to the delicate paint layers. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or modern polishes that can soften historical finishes. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent the wood from drying out and the gesso from cracking.

Are these pieces in original paint?

Many items retain their original or early surface finishes, while others show evidence of historical maintenance. Listing descriptions often specify whether the paint is original to the period. Examining the piece under natural light helps reveal the subtle craquelure and wear associated with age.

What is folk art wood carving?

Folk art encompasses utilitarian objects created by self-taught or local artisans rather than academic workshops. Examples include decoy birds, trade figures, and small boxes. These items charm collectors through their unpretentious forms and expressive, hand-applied decoration.
