What defines louis xv style chairs?

These chairs are characterised by asymmetrical rococo curves, cabriole legs, and carved scrollwork derived from 18th-century French design. The silhouette avoids straight lines in favour of organic, flowing contours. Craftsmen expressed this aesthetic through carved walnut, giltwood, and painted frames, often paired with upholstered or cane backrests.

How do I date these chairs?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, tool marks left by joiners, and the wear patterns on the finish. 18th-century originals display hand-cut joinery and aged patina, whilst 19th-century revival pieces often utilise tighter machine assistance alongside period styling. Upholstery webbing and interior stuffing materials also provide clues, though many pieces have been recovered or restored during their lifespan.

Where should I place them?

These seats suit drawing rooms, bedrooms, and quiet reading corners where their decorative carving can be appreciated. Open armchairs work well beside a fireplace or paired across a low table. Side chairs function effectively as occasional seating around a room or positioned against a wall beneath a mirror.

Can I use them daily?

Most antique wooden frames remain structurally robust for regular sitting, provided the joints are stable and secure. Walnut and mahogany provide sturdy foundations for everyday domestic use. Care should be taken with fragile textiles like antique silk or delicate cane panels, which benefit from gentle treatment rather than heavy-handed wear.
