How do I secure a replacement key?

Most period boxes utilise lever locks that require a bespoke key fitted by a specialist restorer. Attempting to force an incorrect vintage key can damage the internal mechanism. Working locks add considerable interest to a container, though many historic boxes survive with non-functional mechanisms or missing keys due to centuries of use.

What were tea caddies used for?

Tea caddies stored precious tea leaves securely under lock and key when tea was an expensive imported commodity. Lined compartments kept different blends separate. Wealthy households kept the tea caddy in the parlour or dining room, with the mistress of the house holding the key to regulate consumption.

How do I date a wooden box?

Construction methods, timber choices, and hardware styles provide clear dating evidence. Georgian boxes frequently feature solid mahogany or fine veneers, while Victorian examples often incorporate elaborate marquetry and mother of pearl. Internal linings and paper labels inside the lid can also help narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Are these boxes suitable for daily use?

These containers handle modern storage well, provided they are kept away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture. Jewellery boxes and stationery cabinets adapt easily to contemporary organisation. Careful handling of antique hinges and original lock plates ensures the wooden structure remains stable over time.
