What periods do these sculptures date from?

The pieces span from the late nineteenth century through to the early twentieth century, aligning with the height of the Viennese ceramic industry. Most examples you encounter date around nineteen-hundred, bridging Victorian aesthetics and the rise of Art Nouveau design.

Are these sculptures made of metal?

Despite their appearance, the vast majority are formed from fired terracotta or earthenware rather than cast bronze. Some pieces feature a specialised bronzed finish applied over the clay body to mimic metallic sculpture.

What subjects do the figures depict?

The subjects range widely from human figures, including classical Roman characters and country maidens, to animalier sculptures. You will find dogs, chimpanzees, and figurative groups portrayed with a strong focus on realism and narrative character.

How do I care for a terracotta sculpture?

Keep the piece indoors away from moisture and direct sunlight to protect the painted and pigmented surface finishes. Dust the sculpture gently with a dry, soft cloth rather than using liquid cleaners that might harm the antique paint.
