What were antique French trinket boxes used for?

These boxes held small personal valuables including rings, brooches, pins, and coins on dressing tables and desks. They also served as portable containers for snuff, pills, or folded love letters during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

How do I date an antique French trinket box?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, materials, and maker signatures found on the base or metal mounts. Rococo Revival pieces point to the mid-nineteenth century, while geometric lines indicate Art Deco origins from the 1920s and 1930s. Silver hallmarks and metal standards stamped on the rims provide precise chronological markers for certified French pieces.

How do I care for a vintage glass and ormolu box?

Clean glass panels with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, avoiding harsh chemicals that might strip the original gilt finish. Protect the delicate metal mounts by keeping the box away from damp environments. Handle the hinged lids gently to prevent strain on the original pins and joints.

What is the difference between a casket and a trinket box?

Caskets generally describe larger, more architectural storage pieces designed to sit prominently on a surface. They often feature heavy bronze frames and velvet-lined interiors. Trinket boxes encompass smaller, intimate containers meant for daily use with minor jewellery items.
