What is an antique drinks cupboard?

An antique drinks cupboard is a dedicated piece of furniture designed to store bottles, glassware, and mixing accessories for entertaining guests. These pieces range from tall corner wall-hanging cupboards to sophisticated 1930s cocktail cabinets featuring drop-down serving flaps and fitted interiors.

How do I date an antique drinks cupboard?

Dating relies on identifying the prevailing style, construction timber, and hardware associated with specific periods like the Georgian, Victorian, or Art Deco eras. Details such as burr walnut veneers point towards the 1920s and 1930s, whilst mahogany and oak construction often indicate 18th or 19th-century origins.

Where should I place a corner drinks cupboard?

Corner drinks cupboards work well in dining rooms, living spaces, or hallways where floor space is limited yet empty architectural angles need utilisation. Wall-hanging versions affix securely at eye level, whilst tall floor-standing corner cabinets anchor the room while providing enclosed lower storage.

What is the difference between a chiffonier and a cocktail cabinet?

A chiffonier is a traditional low sideboard with lower cupboards and often a shelf superstructure, commonly originating in the Victorian or Regency periods. A cocktail cabinet is typically a mid-20th-century or Art Deco form designed specifically for serving drinks, featuring specialised interior compartments and pull-out trays.
