Paper quality, watermark analysis and typography further assist in distinguishing original seventeenth-century printings from later restrikes or facsimile reproductions.

Why do some maps have Latin text on the reverse?

Many seventeenth-century maps published by European houses included descriptive text in Latin on the back of the sheet to accompany the regional atlas. This text was printed from separate type settings while the map impression was struck. Buyers often find these double-sided sheets displayed with glass backs to reveal the historical commentary printed behind the cartography.

Are these maps original or reproductions?
