What is Bristol blue glass?

Bristol blue glass is a deep cobalt-coloured material produced primarily in England during the Georgian and Victorian eras. It was utilised for decanters, cream jugs, and table services. The term became a general description for fine English cobalt glassware rather than a strict indicator of a single factory. Makers used metallic oxides to achieve the intense colour.

How do I date antique decanters?

Dating relies on shape, manufacturing technique, and handling marks such as pontil scars on the base. Georgian and William IV examples often feature distinct neck rings and hand-blown characteristics. Later Victorian and Edwardian productions show shifts in stylistic details and heavier crystal composition. Comparing form against documented periods clarifies the timeline.

How were glass decanters used?

Decanters served to store and pour wine, spirits, and cordials at the dining table or sideboard. Cork stoppers helped preserve the contents within the bottle. They formed part of matched or serviceable sets alongside glasses and serving bottles. Their appearance reflected the formal hospitality customs of the period.
