Why are they called wally dogs?

The term is a traditional Scottish and northern English nickname for ceramic mantel ornaments, particularly these spaniel figures. Over generations, the label stuck to describe the earthenware dogs that once sat proudly on cottage and parlour chimneys.

Were they always made in pairs?

Potters designed the vast majority of these spaniel figures to be produced and sold as matching left and right-facing pairs. This symmetry suited the formal arrangement of nineteenth-century mantelpieces, where they anchored either end of the hearth.

How do I date an older pair?

Dating relies on observing the potting style, the weight of the earthenware, and the richness of the hand-painted enamel or lustre. Victorian examples often show softer brushwork and specific glaze characteristics associated with nineteenth-century production methods.

Where should I display them?

These decorative figures sit naturally upon a mantelpiece, shelf, or sideboard where their symmetrical arrangement can be appreciated. They function best when placed at a slight elevation, echoing their original nineteenth-century placement in the home.
