How do I wind a vintage travel clock?

Most portable clocks utilise an attached key or a thumb-turn mechanism located on the backplate. Care should be taken not to overwind the mainspring. For 8-day movements, winding is required significantly less often than standard daily timepieces, ensuring reliable timekeeping throughout the week.

What is a carriage clock?

A carriage clock is a portable timepiece traditionally equipped with a swing handle and glazed panels. They were designed for upper-class travellers in the 19th century. Miniature versions became popular for domestic bedside use, offering precision timekeeping in a compact, decorative format.

How do I date an Art Deco clock?

Art Deco clocks usually feature geometric motifs, streamlined chrome plating, or modern materials like bakelite and coloured glass. These design markers typically place the piece in the 1930s. Maker signatures and hallmarks stamped onto silver cases or movements can also provide exact production dates.

Can these clocks be used daily?

Many of these pieces were engineered for regular travel and daily desk use, making them suitable for everyday placement. Serviced movements ensure reliable operation. Handling should remain gentle, particularly with folding leather travel cases and delicate enamel dials from the Victorian and Edwardian periods.
