What is an artwork on panel?

An artwork on panel is a painting or textile created on a rigid support such as wood, rather than flexible canvas. These pieces range from seventeenth-century portraits to nineteenth-century landscapes. Makers preferred wooden boards and firm backings for stability, allowing intricate brushwork or needlework to survive centuries of display.

How do I care for antique panels?

Keep wooden panels and framed textiles away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and rapid temperature changes that cause wood to warp or paint to crack. Display them on stable interior walls with steady climate control. Dust frames and glass gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid applying moisture or cleaning solutions directly to the painted or embroidered surface.

How can I tell the age of a panel?

Dating relies on examining the preparation of the wood, the pigments used in the paint, the style of the frame, and any signatures or inscriptions on the reverse. Seventeenth and eighteenth-century pieces often show distinct tool marks on the timber back. Clothing styles, subjects, and framing techniques also help narrow down the period, from Georgian needlework to Victorian oil paintings.

Were these panels meant to be wall art?

Many painted panels and framed textiles were created specifically as wall art to decorate wealthy homes and public institutions. Others originated as architectural elements, church panels, or decorative furniture inserts. Over the centuries, owners re-framed these portable pieces to display them as independent works of art in domestic settings.
