What subjects appear in these paintings?

The works primarily depict Scottish scenery, including highland cattle, sheep grazing near lochs, coastal castles, and urban views of Edinburgh. Artists also recorded historical genre scenes, portraits, and sporting pursuits. These subjects reflect a nineteenth-century fascination with the romantic wilderness and cultural heritage of Scotland, capturing both wild terrain and everyday rural life.

How can I tell watercolours from oils?

Watercolour paintings use transparent pigments on paper and require protective glass framing to prevent moisture damage. Oil paintings utilise thick or blended pigments on canvas or wood panels, presenting a textured surface. Examining the support under magnification reveals the woven threads of canvas or the absorbent fibres of period paper.

Are these paintings usually signed?

Many pieces feature artist signatures, monograms, or inscriptions written directly on the front or recorded on the reverse of the canvas and stretcher. Some historic works remain unattributed or carry only period attribution notes from later collectors. Signatures provide a direct link to recorded painters, though unsigned works from the Scottish school are also common in the historical record.

How should I display antique paintings?

These artworks require stable indoor wall spaces away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations. Maintaining consistent environmental conditions preserves both the painted surface and any original gilt wood framing. Allowing adequate space around each frame lets the composition and period materials be viewed clearly without competing wall decorations.
