We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Alexander Nasmyth painted the definitive contemporary portrait of Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1787. Subsequent artist copies and period reproductions after Nasmyth became popular commemorative artworks throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Period portraits were typically painted using oil pigments applied to canvas, wood panels, or artist boards. Frames were commonly crafted from timber with hand-applied gesso and genuine gold leaf or bronze powders.

Inspection of the reverse reveals age indicators such as oxidised wood, natural canvas discolouration, and period framing hardware. Examining craquelure patterns in the paint layer and examining the construction of the stretchers or panels helps verify period origin.

Classical portraits can be integrated into modern settings by placing them above console tables, within gallery walls, or in study spaces to provide visual contrast against contemporary wall colours and minimalist furniture.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently with a soft dry brush and consult a professional conservator for cleaning surface grime or discoloured varnish.
