How do I date a dressing mirror?

Dating relies on observing stylistic markers, timber choices, and construction methods characteristic of specific decades. Regency pieces often exhibit classical restraint with mahogany, while later Victorian items lean towards heavier carving or walnut. Hardware and backboards provide further clues to age. Hand-cut screws, secondary woods, and the bevel or clarity of the mirror glass help narrow down the manufacturing period within the nineteenth century.

What is the difference between cheval and table mirrors?

Cheval mirrors are tall, floor-standing units designed for full-length viewing, typically supported by heavy side pillars and a stable base with feet or trestles. They occupy floor space as independent furniture. Table mirrors are compact versions meant to rest on top of a dressing table, chest, or bureau. They often feature small drawer compartments beneath the swing glass for storing personal items.

Where should I place a dressing mirror?

These mirrors suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, and hallways, where they bounce natural light around the space and create an open atmosphere. Table models require a sturdy surface like a chest of drawers or a dedicated vanity. Freestanding cheval mirrors work best in corners or against empty walls with adequate clearance for the swinging frame. Ensure the floor is level so the pivot mechanisms function smoothly without twisting the wood.

Are the mirror plates original?

Many nineteenth-century mirrors retain their original glass, which can exhibit subtle foxing, minor speckling, or slight distortion. These natural signs of ageing confirm the historical authenticity of the piece. When replacement glass occurs, it is usually clearer and lacks historical imperfections. Examining the backing boards and the way the glass is secured in the rebate helps determine if the plate has been changed.
