How do I choose the right size?

Nineteenth-century sizing conventions differ significantly from modern standard mattress dimensions. Many antique frames require custom mattresses or minor adjustments to fit contemporary spaces. Reviewing the internal length and width measurements listed for each bedstead ensures compatibility with standard modern bases.

Are wooden beds easy to assemble?

Most wooden bedsteads utilise traditional bolt-in or slot-in side rail connections that require basic tools for setup. Heavier frames benefit from two people during assembly to protect the timber joints. Checking the hardware and brackets included with the frame confirms whether original fittings remain intact.

How do I care for antique brass?

Brass components benefit from gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with appropriate metal care products to maintain their finish. Abrasive cleaners should be avoided to preserve the original patina. Regular maintenance prevents tarnish buildup on exposed Victorian headboards and decorative mountings.

Can I use a modern mattress?

Modern mattresses fit successfully into many antique frames, provided the internal dimensions accommodate the width and length. Slatted wooden bases or modern metal slats can be introduced to support contemporary mattresses securely. Ensuring the side rails sit at the correct height prevents the mattress from resting too low or protruding awkwardly.
