Where were settles placed?

These seats traditionally stood in the halls or kitchens of country houses, farmhouses, and taverns. Their high backs and solid sides served to keep out cold draughts from stone floors and uninsulated doors. Positioned near the hearth, they provided sheltered seating for the household before central heating existed.

What is a box settle?

A box settle incorporates a compartment beneath the hinged seat for storing household items like blankets or boots. This dual purpose made them practical additions to busy domestic spaces. The enclosed base also prevented cold air from circulating underneath the occupant.

How do I identify a lambing chair?

Lambing chairs feature high, enclosed wing backs and solid wooden sides designed to protect against draughts. They are typically single-seaters with enclosed box bases. Regional examples often appear from locations like the Lake District or the Netherlands.

Are these seats comfortable?

While historic wooden benches were built for durability rather than modern lounging, many people add loose squab cushions for comfort. The high back and armrests provide a secure, enclosed seating position. Their firm structure encourages an upright posture suited to dining or sitting by a fire.
