Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This dark brown huanghuali hardwood Chinese bench dates from the Qing Dynasty period of 1900. The settee incorporates a panelled backrest with a roll-over top rail containing four relief-carved panels depicting scholars objects and paraphernalia. Low side armrests include smaller carved panels, while the panelled seat sits above a decorated frieze displaying key-fret patterns and carved stepped feet on square moulded legs. Measuring 80 cm high, 183 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep, this substantial piece suits placement in a gentleman's library or hallway. The dark wood finish shows an original patina across the hardwood surfaces. The bench provides practical seating alongside traditional Chinese decorative detailing.

FAQs

Traditional Chinese wooden benches and daybeds, often originating from the Ming and Qing dynasties, are renowned for their mortise-and-tenon joinery, low-profile silhouettes, and intricate low-relief carvings depicting auspicious symbols, fretwork, or scholars objects.

High-status Chinese furniture was predominantly constructed from prized hardwoods such as Huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera) and Zitan, joined without metal nails using precision frame-and-panel techniques and complex joinery.

Authenticity can be identified through traditional joinery techniques, natural wood patina, hand-carved decorative motifs, evidence of age-related wear around stress points, and characteristic wood grain patterns unique to endemic hardwoods.

A Chinese carved bench functions as a dramatic focal piece in an entryway or living room, pairing well with understated modern textiles, contemporary artwork, and minimal decor to highlight its rich wood tone and intricate carved detail.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish periodically, keeping the item away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and extreme humidity fluctuations.
