Bellarmine jugs, also known as greybeards, were salt-glazed stoneware vessels produced in the Rhineland, particularly Frechen near Cologne, from the 16th to the 18th centuries. They typically feature a bearded mask in relief on the neck and were originally used for storing and transporting liquids such as wine and beer.

These vessels were crafted from dense stoneware clay fired at high temperatures until vitrified. During the salt-glazing process, common salt was thrown into the kiln, reacting with the silica in the clay to produce a characteristic pebble-textured, glossy surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristics such as heavy, dense stoneware bodies, distinctive orange-peel salt-glaze textures, hand-applied handles, and moulded medallions or masks. Signs of age include surface wear, kiln scars, and historical repairs or crazing.

Such historic items work well as sculptural focal points on mantelpieces, consoles, or within open shelving units, contrasting with clean architectural lines. Their earthy tones and organic textures complement rustic, minimalist, or eclectic interior schemes.

Preserve stoneware by keeping it away from rapid temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight. Clean gently with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water, especially if the piece has historical cracks or repairs.
