This 1930 decorative object takes the form of a painted terracotta figure depicting a young boy in a warm orange top, kneeling on a black square plinth base and holding a clear rectangular glass basin. The Victorian style sculpture features modelled brown hair, bare feet, and a registration mark reading Rd. 817899 on the reverse. Signs of age include very slight chips to the glass bowl. It suits placement on a sideboard top in a living space or sunlit conservatory.

FAQs

Figural vessels combine sculpted human or animal forms with functional glass containers such as fish bowls, terrariums, or trays. Popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these decorative objects served both practical and ornamental roles in period interiors.

These items typically feature cast terracotta, plaster, or chalkware bases finished with hand-painted polychrome pigments. The removable or resting containers are crafted from clear molded or hand-blown glass designed to fit the contours of the sculpture.

Authentic period examples demonstrate age-appropriate paint wear, seam marks from historical casting techniques, and distinct base weight. The associated glass insert often displays minor bubbles, mold lines, or pontil marks indicative of traditional glassmaking.

Position the piece on a sideboard, console table, or deep window sill where natural light accentuates the clear glass vessel. The glass container can be displayed empty as a sculptural accent or filled with dried botanicals, moss, or small decorative items.

Dust the painted sculpture gently using a clean, soft-bristled brush or dry microfiber cloth to preserve the surface pigment. The glass container should be removed prior to washing separately with warm water and dried completely before replacing it.
