The beautifully carved mother bear stands upright against the trunk, her powerful paws gripping the tree as she looks upwards towards her cub. Her open mouth reveals intricately carved teeth and tongue, while her expressive original glass eyes bring a remarkable sense of realism and character to the composition. Above her, the young bear clings to the trunk beneath the spreading branches, creating a wonderfully animated woodland scene.

The quality of the carving is exceptional throughout, from the individually defined strands of fur and carefully modelled paws to the deeply textured bark, naturalistic branches and intricately worked roots. Every element has been executed with remarkable attention to detail, giving the entire piece an impressive sense of depth, movement and lifelike character.

The substantial oak tree branches extend outwards to form numerous coat and hat hooks, while a lower carved branch provides a practical holder for walking sticks, canes and umbrellas. Beneath this is the original removable drip tray, beautifully incorporated into the richly carved woodland base with its intertwined roots and foliage.

Standing an impressive 209 cm tall, this magnificent hall stand is as much a work of sculpture as a functional piece of antique furniture. Its exceptional proportions, rich colour and beautifully aged patina make it a truly commanding centrepiece for a grand entrance hall, country residence, hunting lodge or distinguished private collection.

A highly collectible and particularly impressive example of Black Forest carving, displaying the remarkable artistry and naturalistic craftsmanship for which the finest 19th century Swiss carved furniture is so highly regarded.

Condition: Very good antique condition with a beautiful original patina and minor age-related wear consistent with its age. Retaining the original glass eyes and umbrella drip tray.
