Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Victorian etagere, or whatnot, serves as a versatile multi-tier display stand fashioned from dark brown rosewood. It displays three graduated rectangular shelves bordered by raised wooden edges, supported by turned spindle corner posts that terminate in decorative turned finials at the top and small brass castors on the feet. The polished timber shows a warm grain throughout the surface. Suitable for placement in a vacant corner, this freestanding piece provides functional display space for decorative objects or books in a living area or study. Its compact footprint fits comfortably into smaller spaces while offering multiple levels for storage and presentation.

Popularised during the late 18th and 19th centuries, whatnots and etageres were open-tiered shelving units designed to display ornaments, books, and curio collections in formal drawing rooms.

19th-century etageres were constructed using dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, frequently accented with hand-turned turned uprights and brass castors.

Authentic period pieces feature distinctive dark rosewood grain patterns, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned corner posts topped with finials, and original metal or brass wheel castors.

An etagere functions as a versatile accent piece when placed in an alcove or corner, suitable for arranging art books, ceramics, or small potted plants to add contrast.

Position timber items away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent warping, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply a thin layer of beeswax along the wood grain annually.
